The Mechanic
I honestly had no idea what this movie was really about other than since it had Statham there is a guarantee of three things: Guns, big explosions and sex. So when I saw a family bring in a kid that looked between 5 or 6 I cringed a little. Honestly, who brings a little kid to an R rated film? Within the first 15 mins or so there was already a sex scene, can just see the kid later going “mommy, what were they doing?” “Uh… they were… playing… wrestling! Yes… wrestling.. in the nude…” No wonder our elementary kids are having sex already.
Anyways, back to the point of my post, the movie! So aside from two very pointless bedroom scenes, the movie was alright. It’s nothing I haven’t really seen before. Statham is of course typecast, and if you take him out of that zone it just doesn’t work very well. Good example “In the Name of the King”. That movie was horrible to begin with, but he was so out of his element, it’s like he so wanted to grab a fast car and a gun but just couldn’t. So anyways, Statham’s a gun for hire basically, he’s tricked into shooting his only friend, he then allows his friend’s son, after much pestering, to become his apprentice. They pull of jobs, some a bit sloppily since the kid is stubborn and wants to do it his way. Statham realizes he’s been duped by his superiors and he goes after the ones that played a role in his friend’s demise etc etc. It’s a typical Statham film, not that that’s bad, but if you’re expecting something really new, don’t go looking to this movie. This is just a typical action film, lots of guns, explosions and over the top scenes. Though maybe a little laid back compared to some of the stuff he’s in like Transporter and Crank.
Would I recommend this one? Only to someone who really enjoys Statham movies, to someone who’s not a fan off him, eh go watch Transporter. It’s one of his best. I would say wait for a rental too since there’s nothing really spectacular with the special effects that would demand seeing it on the big screen. It’d be a good Friday night rental.
The Other Guys and the Other Stuff
So we went to see this movie last week and it was funny! It’s about a cop that messed up so he’s kept in back as a paper pusher and he has to watch everyone else get all the “fun” jobs (Mark Wahlberg), and his partner who enjoys being a paper pusher so therefore never goes out on any calls (Will Farrel). He finally gets angry enough he takes his partner hostage and forces him to go on a call.
This movie is funny right off the bat. Starts out with a bang and never really slows down. Even the “emotional” moments aren’t boring. Which I find kind of rare as of late. Most movies I’ve seen either have felt rushed at points or boring and drawn out, like the writers couldn’t find a good balance. Anyways, there are two actors in it that are kind of a surprise to see. I won’t say who for those who haven’t seen it yet, I don’t want to spoil it. They only end up in it for maybe ten minutes but while they’re there they steal the show.
The movie is PG-13, for good reason, some of the humor is pretty adult, or would be way above a child’s head. So definitely not a family movie. It’s a pretty good Friday night out film, though seeing it on the big screen isn’t a must as there’s nothing real spectacular effects-wise. I’d definitely recommend checking it out on DVD if you wanna save a few bucks rather than going to the cinema.
As for other stuff! The book I’ve worked on the last three and half months has finally made it to the printer! It’s exciting! We’re going to be launching a domain for this series soon too! I get to be in charge of that.
I’m pretty jazzed about that. I’ll be posting updates about it here from time to time and maybe some of the art once the book is read to be publicized.
Then I can finally show the world what it’s gonna be about. Woot!
Updates around here, TONS of icons have been uploaded, a couple commissions, a comic page and some personal art. So go check out my 2010 gallery. ![]()
That’s all for now folks!
Happy Fall!
Movie Time!
I’ve seen so many movies in the last couple weeks. So here’s two reviews, and I’ve got more to come,
I had seen the trailers and thought, “Hey! This looks like it could be a cool movie, lots of action!” Boy was I wrong! This movie is so boring I started to fall asleep, I’m glad I did not waste my money on it in cinemas.
I think the trailers for this one were the most misleading I’ve ever seen. The only redeeming quality this film had was Viggo, but even he could not save it.
One thing I hated was the shots in this film jumped around so much it got confusing. Flash backs are nice, yes but freaking put them in front of the scene that would make more sense. For example they show a shot of two people playing the piano, ok cool but then they cut to some random shot that has nothing to do with a piano. Then ten fifteen minutes later they actually show the reason for the flashback, the father finds a piano and then mourns the loss of his wife. Why couldn’t they have just put that AFTER he finds the piano, it would have made much more sense.
Storyline was so tedious I ended up looking at the clock about five times before the movie ended thinking “When is this ever going to end? Does the kid ever get kidnapped?” No he does not, even though it looked like it in the trailer. No all this movie is is the trip a father and son take to the east coast, and the father dies and leaves the kid and… FFFFFFFFF BORING! All the other characters in the film stay around for maybe a grand total of five minutes, then you don’t see them anymore. This movie was about two hours long, it felt more like four. They are put in so many situations where an amazing action sequence could have been put in but no they just LEAVE. Nobody chases them or anything. So much setup and so much let down. I kept hoping till the end.
And another thing! They show so many flash backs but not ONCE do they actually say WHY the world is in chaos now, why barely anybody is alive, why all animals are dead, etc. That annoyed me to no end. They showed random giant fires, cities that are completely trashed, but never once even drop a hint of what happened. Ok I can use my imagination but it would be nice to know what these people went through BEFORE just to have a little background.
So my opinion, boring boring boring movie, I will never watch it again. Don’t even bother with it unless you want to watch a bunch of lame dialog and a crybaby boy tailing his paranoid father around a world that’s been blown up and burned to a crisp just to see him die at the end.
I went into this movie hoping it wouldn’t suck. I’ve seen quite a few bad post apocalyptic films lately and none would I watch again. Either boring beyond all reason or there was just no point to the movie at all. So this film was refreshing. It’s not the most fast paced movie ever, but it had a good storyline, and interesting characters, it also makes you think a little.
The ending isn’t terribly predictable actually, which I liked. It was kind of a twist ending. The acting was pretty good and the storyline was rather interesting. One thing that really caught my attention was the music. It’s eery but quite good, slow but still enjoyable. Really adds to the feel of the film. The entire movie is shot in a sepia tone, which I haven’t seen for a while.
It was also kind of nice to see the Bible mentioned in a major film and it wasn’t being bashed. It showed how it will never be used for evil, the “twist” near the end and how a true believer is so devoted even to the end when they hear “the call”.
The movie is a little gory in places but it doesn’t really dwell on it.
I would recommend this movie to anyone who enjoys post apocalyptic type films, and movies that provoke a little thought.
More reviews soon, cause I just got back from “Knight and Day”, will be seeing “Inception” soon and I have seen “Repo Man” “Shrek 4″ and “Robin Hood”. I’ll put a little blip about all of them here.
